Are Your Fitness Goals in Midlife Really Yours, or Just What Social Media Tells You “Should” Want?

If you told me I could wake up tomorrow with six-pack abs, I’d be thrilled. But if you told me I had to give up ice cream, bubbles, and Sunday night pizza to get them? Hard pass.
Sound familiar? That right there is the thing most of us don’t want to admit: sometimes the goals we say we want aren’t actually the goals we’re willing to live for.
And there’s no shame in that. None. Zero.
I know I have been guilty of seeing midlife fitness influencers on social media pictures of them looking “shreddy”. Their veins are poppin and we see their lifted booties and wonder why gravity took ours over.
But Im hear to remind you. There is nothing wrong with just wanting to be strong and healthy just as much as there's nothing wrong with if your goal is to be sculpted and lean.
Just know that often times, the fitfluencers you see have a pretty strict workout and nutrition plan to look that way. Lets talk more about this and figure out if your “want to have” is in alignment with your “willing to do”.
Why Your Goals Feel So Hard to Reach
So many women I talk to feel stuck in this cycle:
- They set a goal.
- Their actions don’t quite line up with it.
- They beat themselves up for “failing.”
- Confidence and energy take a nosedive.
But here’s the truth: you’re not failing. You may just be chasing the wrong goal for your life.
That’s why it feels like swimming upstream every single day. Exhausting, frustrating, and never-ending.
How to Know If Your Goal Fits Your Life
If your goal requires you to:
- Work out 6 days a week when you can barely commit to 3 between work and other life challenges…
- Count calories when you’d rather go out with friends and family and eat what and when you want…
- Run half marathons even though you hate running…
…you’re going to burn out, not level up.
It’s like trying to squeeze into jeans two sizes too small. Sure, you can force it, but it won’t feel good or last long.
It doesn’t mean you’re weak. It means the goal doesn’t fit into your life right now. And that’s okay.
If you’re sitting there thinking, “Okay, but where do I even start?” you’re not alone. I put together a free Muscle Through Menopause Guide with simple ways to build strength and feel good in your body again, without making it complicated.
5 Ways to Set Goals You’ll Actually Stick With
Take the “Ice Cream Test”
Ask yourself: am I really willing to give up (insert thing you love here) to get this goal? If the answer is no, that’s clarity, not failure.
Check Your Actions
Look at what you actually do in a week. Does it support your goal, or does it support something else?
Let That Ish Go
Stop holding onto goals that drag you down and make you feel “less than.” Free yourself from the pressure.
Choose Goals That Energize You
Feeling strong enough to carry your own groceries. Dancing at your kid’s wedding without needing to sit down. Loving how you look in your jeans. Those are all worthy goals.
The Bottom Line on Midlife Goals
You don’t need 20,000 steps a day, six workouts a week, and a food scale to be worthy.
You DO need to set goals that actually make your life feel happier and more fulfilled, not added stress and doubt. Goals that honor your joy, your energy, and your real priorities.
So if you’ve been grinding toward something that feels heavy and frustrating, maybe it’s not you. Maybe it’s the goal.
Let it go. Make space for goals that fit the life you want to live. That’s where the magic happens.
